Position Summary:

The EVP, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides scientific/medical knowledge and strategic support to teams on multiple agency accounts; synthesizes a broad range of category and competitive information to identify unique strategies which will benefit our clients’ brands; ensures that the highest levels of scientific/medical rigor and strategic integrity are maintained across agency deliverables, including new business pitches, presentations, and produced materials.

The CMO has at least 8- 10+ years’ experience in addition to a research background and demonstrated leadership and ambassadorial skills. The CMO will be skilled at driving strategic and scientific clinical strategy as well as delegating workflow and training. As the scientific lead, he/she is the face of Wunderman Thompson Health (WTH), representing the company to current/future clients and prospective candidates.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct scientific strategy across WTH’s portfolio of accounts; guide agency projects to ensure that they are medically and scientifically sound and adhere to the highest levels of integrity
  • Accountable for client satisfaction, scientific rigor and accuracy, and strategic excellence
  • Establish and implement best practices for medical strategy on existing accounts and business development
  • Elevate scientific prominence across WTH, driving a culture that values both science and creativity and leads to improved scientific reputation for the agency; values both science and creativity, and leads to improved scientific reputation for agency
  • Build team of Medical Strategists, leveraging pool of freelance resources when needed Identify and secure business opportunities on existing and new accounts
  • Understand industry practices and standards, and stay current with future trends and directions, for therapeutic categories for which s/he is responsible
  • Demonstrate familiarity with each brand’s data, clinical trial program, target audience, market landscape and competitors, often acting as an agency partner to the brand’s own internal medical directors
  • Provide relevant information, as requested to the WTH staff on relevant health conditions and therapies
  • Provide creative copy teams with support in understanding therapeutic categories and interpretation of data
  • Consult with creative teams to brainstorm copy flow, data visualization and ongoing review of projects for accuracy and relevance
  • Pursue date mining of client’s and competitor’s data when necessary, to identify new claims or support existing claims consistent with the client’s strategic direction
  • Medical resourcing and the ability to act as point of contact for senior client medical officers
  • Attend local/national/international scientific conferences to gather data, draft conference reports, interview experts and HCPs regarding competitive products and evolving therapies, interface with client medical and marketing teams on-site
  • Lead scientific strategy, ideation and execution on new business pitches resulting in new business wins. - This involves the preparation of; disease backgrounders and gap analyses, conduct research (data reviews and in-person interviews with physicians as needed)
  • Develop and maintain relationships with important community physicians and opinion leaders in therapeutic categories of importance to WTH
  • Lead primary research amongst key opinion leaders, other health care professionals and patients to increase knowledge surrounding current or future agency accounts
  • Perform analysis of secondary research to identify important facts and insights related to a disease state or therapy
  • Work closely with other divisions of WTH, to provide medical/scientific strategic support on an as needed basis
  • Partner with Account Services and Finance on timelines and resource utilization as well as review and assess budget
  • Adhere to all best practices on all projects as dictated by our own standards and all external laws and guidelines

Requirements:

  • Deep experience in oncology and other therapeutic categories
  • Experience in developing promotional content
  • Previous management experience
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Highly organized individual who effectively synthesizes information, and communicates clearly with clients, agency staff, and senior management
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple work streams and projects simultaneously
  • Working knowledge of pharma regulations on promotion

Qualifications:

  • Education: Undergraduate BS degree in relevant human sciences, Doctoral degree (PharmD, PhD or MD) in medically-related field preferred
  • Experience: 8-10+ years’ experience within a healthcare-focused communications company (Agency, Med Ed, Consultant)
