Position Summary:

The primary responsibilities of the Managing Editor are to ensure that the editorial content of assigned projects is error-free and strategically on target and that projects are completed in a timely manner. As the principal editorial staff member for selected accounts, the Managing Editor works closely with Account Services and Scientific Services and is kept informed of the client’s marketing strategy/objectives and other relevant information crucial to the satisfactory execution of assigned projects and the development of ideas for new business.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all facets of editorial projects
  • Edit content, rewrite as necessary and proofread various types of documents for syntax/grammar, spelling consistency, and style (AMA, client, or journal, as appropriate) throughout all stages of project preparation and production
  • Ensure that reference citations are complete and current
  • Obtain permission to re-use published materials/figures
  • Retrieve and file supporting references in EndNote libraries for projects
  • Keep abreast of FDA regulations concerning medical education
  • Liaise with Account Services, Scientific Services, and Production to ensure satisfactory completion of projects
  • Meet deadlines established by time and events scheduled and agreed to by Managing Editor, Director of Editorial Services, Scientific Services, and Account Management
  • Meet editorial manpower budgets for projects; alert Director of Editorial Services if budgets will be exceeded.
  • Keep Direct of Editorial Services informed regarding workload, need for additional resources (eg, people, references), and status of accounts/projects
  • Supervise freelancers and ensure quality of their work and time
  • Help develop skills of Editors and Editorial Assistants, working together with the Director of Editorial Services

Requirements:

  • Must have good oral and written communications skills and know AMA style
  • Must be well-organized
  • Self-starter able to work quickly and efficiently while juggling multiple projects under pressure
  • Knowledge of layout and production process
  • Attention to detail essential, as is flexibility to work late when required
  • Must be conversant in Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or science.

Experience:

  • 5-10 years of experience proofreading/editing/rewriting for medical communications, medical publishing, or the pharmaceutical industry
